Welcome our 2024 Barrelman, Matt Tarr! Prescott Frontier Days, Inc. is proud to add Matt to the talented list of specialty acts that add humor and delight to the rodeo arena. Originally from Cody, Wyoming, Matt’s interest in rodeos and livestock started at an early age and he always knew his life would involve rodeo.
As he transitioned from roping at a young age to fighting bulls to barrelman, Matt was able to learn from the best. Known for their camaraderie, devotion, and trust for each other, one of his fellow barrelmen once handed him a mic during a live show and said, “here’s your chance!” Matt soon found his footing and with his quick wit and passion for making people laugh, Matt believes “it’s our job to make you forget about life for two hours.”
One of Matt’s challenges was to find a way to open up to the audience and get comfortable out there in front of thousands of people. His dedication to the sport, along with guidance from fellow barrelmen, has helped him overcome his initial fear. He has now entertained people from all walks of life and has even become adept at using humor to communicate with folks who don’t speak the same language to help them enjoy the rodeo experience.
Although he makes it look easy, it takes skill to use a microphone while working with the barrel and large livestock. “Gotta have faith in yourself; you can’t go in halfway,” he tells us. “If you want to do it, you’ve got to do it. We’ve got to give it everything we’ve got.” Unlike choreographed sports events, no two rodeos are alike and feature dynamics that can add to the events dramatically, like weather. Since he’s an entertainer, he has to make the most of it, muddy or dry. Additionally, animals have their own minds, so he never knows what’s going to happen in the arena and has to be ready.
